Pictures

I put JayDonn down on the floor next to Dillon. A few minutes later I came back into the living room to see this...
He turned enough to get his feet on Dillon and fell asleep. I think we have to teach Jay not to "walk all over his big brother!" (quite literally!!)

This is a mom who lives right near me. Her daughter has the same physical therapist and vision teacher. The little girl has clouded corneas so she can see light, but nothing else. Please pray for them. She had one cornea transplant and it didn't work she will be having one in each eye again soon. Please pray I can be an encouragement to them!
Walks are hard work when you have to sit in a stroller and look at everything that goes by!
Isn't she beautiful?
Daddy put their car seat in the van on Saturday. It is much better this way. It was very hard to get Dillon in without hitting his head since he is getting so long but still can't hold his head. I can sit on the back seat and face them. Daddy even put a cool light in the van so I can see Dillon better - I'll have to get a picture of that sometime.

Jay loves his new car seat, he can sit tall and look around. Plus he can see Mommy instead of the back of a seat!
Dillon has had a rough day today. He did not do well the whole way to church, during church, and home from church. He did okay in the afternoon and then was terrible during night church. The poor boy just has so much to cough out. He is resting right now on the floor with oxygen. If you think about it, please pray he will have a better day on Monday. I have been trying to do his therapy with him, he seems to like it. I did it a lot on Saturday and he enjoyed it. We take Sundays off, so tomorrow I will start again - IF he is feeling better. Thank you - and remember - praying DOES make a difference! If you start to doubt if God is hearing our prayers for Dillon just remember that he is now able to hear!! (That's what I do when I start thinking that God isn't answering our prayers!)

Remembering

This is more for me than anything - don't feel like I expect you to read it all! It is just that I went back and read my first two blogs and realized that I had forgotten that Dillon had certain tests done! Also, I was thinking that I wished I had started blogging right away after Dillon was born as I forget the order of events from the NICU and all that we were going through. I decided to take all the emails to our church that was sent to update people and put them in the blog so I will have them.

June 16, 2006 8:52pm
Dillon Josiah was born around 8:15(?). He has good color and heart rate,
but will not breathe on his own. Josiah and Tiffany ask us to pray for
him.

Thanks for your prayers. I know they mean a lot to them and Dillon.

Dillon is doing better now. He has begun to breath on his own. The nurses will watch him carefully over the next 24 hours to make sure all is well. Please continue to pray!

Please continue to pray for Dillon, Tiffany and Josiah. They are headed to St Christophers in Philadelphia right now, 7:30AM. They do not know what the problem is, but hopefully the Childrens Hospital there will be able to address it.

I left the hospital at about 3PM today. They were just preparing to take Dillon for a CAT scan. At present he is doing well with the medication they have him on, which seems to be stopping or slowing the seizures. They do not have any test results back yet, and we are not sure if they will get any before Monday because of the weekend. Otherwise he seems to be doing well and they are monitoring him until they find out what the problem is.
Please continue to pray for Josiah and Tiffany. They are exhausted after being up all night. They will be staying at the hospital for the time being. Tiffany’s parents are expected to arrive later tonight as well.
I will update you when I know more.

June 17, 2006 8:32pm
Dillon had a couple more seizures this evening. He is back on the ventilator to help his breathing. They are hoping to do an EEG tonight while he is sleeping.
The tests so far have come back negative and so more testing is needed. Please continue to pray! Tiffany’s parents arrived safely and are with them at the hospital.

June 18, 2006 9:03pm
Tiffany just called and said that Dillon is back on the ventilator as of tonight. Please continue to pray. Tomorrow should be the MRI and hopefully will show the doctors what the problem is.

June 19, 2006 9:18am
Dillon is having his MRI right now. Results should be available this afternoon. He did not have any seizures through the night. Please continue to pray!

June 19, 2006 9:40am
I just got off the phone with Tiffany; she said that Dillon's been having some seizures, and most of the seizures happen without them realizing it. The MRI is going to be an hour and then it will take a couple of hours for the results. Tiffany is planning on being there for at least a week and her parents will probably head home by the weekend or Monday. Keep on praying for the Kuenzis. One blessing so far is that they gave their tracts to a man from Nigeria who claims to be a Christian. This man was reading the tracts and the nurses noticed it, so he gave the nurses the tracts. Pray for opportunites to witness!

Bro. Reeder and I just came back from the hospital in Philadelphia. Please continue to pray for baby Dillon as the doctors search for the problem that is causing these seizures. The MRI came back with good results, making the doctors believe that there is no brain damage at this point. They have also pinpointed the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Right now, they are leaning towards a possible chemical imbalance which may be causing the seizures to take place. We will keep you posted as more information becomes available, but please keep praying!

Rachel and I spent the day in Philadelphia today with Josiah and Tiffany. We got to see Dillon and the doctors narrowed down the problem to three areas. The most likely one (according to the doctor) is that Dillon suffered a brain injury during birth, which is causing the seizures. 72 hours after birth (tonight) should see a gradual decrease in the seizures, if it is really a brain injury. He had a seizure while we were there, but it was the first one in quite some time. The doctors were going to give him a new seizure medicine which should help stop the seizures. Mrs. Kuenzi was a tremendous help in talking with the doctors and was able to expain a lot of the medical terms:D Keep on praying!

We're pleased to announce the birth of our first son, Dillon Josiah Kuenzi born Friday, June 16th 8:10PM 6lb. 10oz 21in. Mom is recovering well and baby Dillon is in stable condition at St. Christopher's hospital for Children in Philadelphia where he was transferred from Allentown. He experienced some birth trauma came out not breathing and he had to be put on the ventilator. He also is having siezures, are they are giving him several medications to get them under control. It seems he is improving a little, so it should just be a matter of time. He will be there for 1-2 weeks or so undergoing tests and treatment if all goes well. I will be commuting to work from there till he comes home.
Dillon means "Faithful" and God has already shown Himself faithful to us in this situation we're going through providing our needs and keeping us looking to him. Thank you so much for your prayer and concern. The love offering was quite unexpected and a real blessing. Thank you.
So many people are going through similar situations. Please pray that we would have specific opportunities to speak to people about Christ and be an encouragement to them in their time of difficulty. 2 pics attached. The first on from birth night and the second with Tiffany is from this morning.
Rejoicing in His Faithfulnes,
Josiah & Tiffany

Brethren,
Continue praying for Dillon. I spoke with Josiah a few minutes ago and he said that Dillon had a better night last night. They are still waiting on the results of the overnight EEG to see if he had more seizures. At this point, it sounds as if the doctors are not confident they will ever know what is causing the seizures – they are simply trying to get them stopped. Pray for Josiah and Tiffany, that the Lord would minister to and through them at this difficult point in their lives…

This was an email my sister sent to a email list of Christian ladies: These are the details as I know them.

Dillon was born on Friday night (6/16) at 8:10. He weighed 6 lbs 10 oz. When he was born, he did not start to breath. So they started to give him oxygen right away. My sister (Tiffany) and her husband (Josiah) stayed with Dillon until 5:00 am. Then they went to grab a quick nap back in her room for about an hour. At 5:30, Dillon had a seizure. Later that morning, they transferred him to a children's hospital in Philadelphia, about 1 1/2 hours away. Since being there he has suffered from many more seizures. They have run blood and urine test, a spinal tap, CatScan, MRI of the brain, EEG's and is currently hooked up to a machine for EEG's. All of the test have not found anything. They thought for awhile it might have been cuz he was in distress during birth, the scans of the brain have not shown any signs of being deprived of oxygen. Since yesterday, I believe he has only had one or two seizures. So that is a positive sign. As of now, they are not saying if he will be in the hospital for two more weeks or months. Today, he started to move his legs! That is a good sign. Due to the medication, he has been a bit "lazy." They did not want him to choke on the breathing tubes or try to pull them out. Today he had surgery to insert a pickline into his heart, so they don't have to us the IV's, mostly because he is swollen and they can't get to a vein and the veins are blowing. The doctors said the surgery went well.
They named him Dillon, because they wanted a name that meant something to them and his name means "faithful". They know the Lord will be faithful in this also, but they still appreciate the prayers on their behalf.
Additional update: He had surgery late last night to put a line in his chest for an IV. He was doing well last I heard. He has started to become active. He moved his arm once above his head. That is all I have heard.
Thanks for your prayers,
Victoria

Church Family,

I stopped in to check on baby Dillon yesterday at the hospital. He has most of the tubes out now and is maintaining his own body temperature. My understanding is that the seizures have stopped, so the next step is to start weaning him off of the anti-seizure meds and monitor him to see if the seizures start again. Pray specifically that he will develop the needed reflex for eating naturally. Right now, he is being fed through a tube. It looks like he will be in the hospital for at least another week, depending on how things go. Continue praying for his recovery and for Josiah and Tiffany during this trial of their faith!

This was written Saturday, but did not go through.
Hello,
First I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, it has been amazing to hear how many people are praying for our little boy. Thank you too for all the notes and cards Thursday it was an encouragement to read the verses many of you said were special to you in hard times. The past couple of days have been very good days for Dillon. Thursday's two main blessings were that I was able to hold him for about two hours (previously I have held him for a total of about 5 minutes) and that they started him on food. They are feeding him through a tube right now, but at least he is eating and handling it well. They will have him up to full feedings by the end of today. Yesterday morning when I went down I saw my little boy with no breathing tube in his mouth and dressed in his own clothes. He is able to hold his body temp so they have taken him out of the heat bed and have him in a crib. I was able to hold him pretty much the whole day yesterday! He had up to 3 IVs in him at once because his veins were difficult. Wed. night they took him into OR and put an IV that goes directly into his chest, so he no longer has any of the others that were turning all red. They took him off one seizure med. and Sunday they will lower another. The Neurologist said he will be on the third for about 3 months, but hopefully at low levels. Early next week they will do another EEG to see if he is having more seizures or not. They will also do another MRI next week to see if there is any brain damage (it may not have shown up right away). Please pray for both of these test and that his gag reflex will start to work (he cannot nurse until he has this plus he can swallow at all until it starts to work. At this point they don’t know if it isn’t working because of the sedition or because of damage from the lack of oxygen/seizures). We are also looking forward to him being able to open his eyes soon! Thank you again for all your prayers and support!

Tiffany, Josiah and Dillon Kuenzi
P.S. We have some pictures to send you, but I am unable to on this computer...we will get them out asap! :-)
June 26, 2006 9:15am
I just spoke with Tiffany. She said the EEG for Dillon is scheduled around 1 this afternoon. He seems to be doing ok at this point. Tiffany’s parents left this morning but now the Kuenzi family is here. Also, Josiah was on his way to work when he hydroplaned his car, so now Tiffany is on her way to go get him. Keep praying for the whole family.

Dillon's EEG was moved to tomorrow, they want him completely off of the one drug before they do the EEG. His MRI was today at 9 am but he moved his head while breathing just enough that they had to re-do it at 4pm so we will not know the results until tomorrow. Thank you again for your prayers, the results of this test should tell us how much/if any brain damage was done.
Thank you,
Tiffany Kuenzi

Dear Church Family,
The doctors say Dillon's diagnosis thus far is "acute hypoxic-ischemia" caused by the asphyxia injury at birth. Basically all this means he suffered lack of oxygen especially to his brain cells and the latest MRI reveals brain damage that appears will mostly affect his motor skills. This is going to be a long term difficulty and only time will tell exactly how it will affect him.
Dillon will be at the hospital indefinitely. He is on and off oxygen and is unable to swallow. Because of this they must suction his oral secretions frequently so he can breathe. He is being fed through a tube and if he doesn't learn to swallow via therapy in the up-coming weeks / months he will have to have a more permanent feeding tube surgically placed directly to his stomach. They have already begun therapy with splints on his hands and wrists.
The doctors have stated 2 options after his stay at the NICU - Dillon can be placed in an intermediate care unit (nursing home for babies) or we can have in home nursing care. One of the NICU nurses has been especially helpful and has assured Tiffany that she can be taught how to properly care for Dillon at home.
Thank you for all your prayer and support at this time. We are accepting this as a long term situation and are leaving it in God's hands. If He chooses to make Dillon better, wonderful! but if not, we know that His way and design is perfect and we can rest in His promise that "My grace is sufficient for thee."
2Cor.12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Depending on Him,Josiah Kuenzi Ps. 18:30

Hello,
We just wanted to let you know that the surgeons talked with us tonight. Dillon is rescheduled for surgery tomorrow afternoon. If the ones before run long his will be moved to Tuesday morning. We are still praying if it is God's Will that he will start to swallow before then, and if not that the surgery will go well.
Thank you,

A letter I sent to all my friends in my address book:
Hello,
I thought I would send out an email and introduce you all to my little son, Dillon Josiah Kuenzi. He was born June 16, 2006 at 8:10 pm. He weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces. There is a lot to tell but I will start at the begining that day. I worked at Sherwin Williams until 2 pm at 3 pm my labor started with contractions 7 minutes apart. By 4:30 I was calling my husband home for work because they were 3 minutes apart. We arrived at the hosptial at 6pm. I was 7 cm dialited so the midwife broke my water 20 minutes later I was fully dialated, after pushing for about an hour he was born at 8:10 - not breathing. Dillon would not breath on his own, they were bagging him in the room for a little bit then rushed him out. We finally got to see him 1.5 hours later. by 3 in the morning they had him off oxygen...he was doing well so at 5 i FINALLY decided to leave his bed side and get some sleep. They woke us up at 6:30 (Sat morning) saying he had a seziure and we would be going down to St. Christopher's hospital for children in Philly. We are still here...he has had several EEG's which showed he was having sezures very frequently that did not make his body move at all. But they are now under control. He has had many other tests as well, but the hardest one on us was the MRI which showed brain damage from the lack of oxygen at birth. They know that most of the damage seems to be in his motor skills but can not tell us what this means for his future. Dillon could be perfectly normal, or he could have many difficulties. They can not tell us why he suffered from lack of oxygen either, the whole pregnancy went very well, my labor was ONLY 5 hours start to finish, I only pushed about an hour, his heart rate was good during the whole labor and even as soon as he was born, i did not have ANY painkillers at all...we have no idea what caused it.) Dillon has not cried at all yet, nor has he swallowed. He is going in tomorrow for surgery to put a feeding tube into his tummy, which will remain there until he can swallow (which may be months until he can) We should finally be able to go home about a week after the tube is in, if all goes well. We are not sure why God has allowed this to happen, but we do know that He DID ALLOW it to happen. I never thought I would have the strength to sit by my son's bed side in the NICU for a month, but God has given the strength right when we needed it. He promises to never leave us, and He hasn't - He has been here with us the whole time. So many people have been praying for him, it is amazing to see! Our church family has lifted us up and helped us in so many ways I will never be able to express it. Some of the neat ways God was at work preparing us for this is that I had a breast pump but was told since it was made by a company that makes formula it may not be good. So Josiah returned it and bought a REALLY good one for REALLY cheap on ebay..I kept telling Josiah that I felt bad having such a nice one since I was only going to use it for when we left the baby with a sitter while we went to dinner - or small things like that. Well I have been using it nonstop since Dillon can't eat but is being tube fed my milk. Praise the Lord! Another way is that Josiah and I wanted a home birth since we were paying for all this out of our own pocket. The midwife wouldn't do a home birth though. We would joke (well half joke but i was really considering it) to not get to the hospital on time and just have the baby at home since everything was going so well. Our baby would have died in our arms if we did that! He really takes care of us!
I am attaching some pictures of our little guy

2Cor.12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Thank you for praying for Dillon, the surgery went well. Dillon had his eyes open and was moving a lot last night when Josiah and I saw him. The nurse said this morning he started pulling at the breathing tube - he was telling them it was time for it to come out! He is breathing on his own again and was very active this morning (in between naps, of course! :-) ) Thank you again for lifting him as well as us up in prayer.

The doctor extabated Dillon (took him off the ventilator) this morning. He will not be able to eat for several days and will only be on IV fluids. Later in the morning he had another visible seizure so they had to increase the meds. Pray for his strength and that God's will would be accomplished in all of this. Thanks.Josiah Kuenzi

Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that Dillon has just been put on the EEG again until sometime tomorrow. I think they are just looking to see how he does at this level of the meds before they send him home. He has video this time too since he is moving more. I am allowed to hold him since there is video and he also taught me how to adjust the camera and how to write a note directly onto the EEG recording. He was also just put back under the heat lamp...he was too cold. So we also need to be praying that he can hold his temp. I am not sure how many days he has to be off the heat lamp before they will send him home.
Oh, the head tech who taught Josiah how to read the EEG is the one who set it up, and he said to him it looks MUCH better already. He still seems to have times of very little brain activity and he is not sure if this should still be happening or not but at least these times are a lot shorter..he is having a lot more activity. So we will keep praying.
~Tiffany~
July 15, 2006 1:15pm
The nuerologists read the latest EEG test and saw pretty much what they expected for a baby with brain damage. The neo-natologist who is working with us is optimistic, but has informed us that at this point Dillon is still at risk of developing cerebral palsy or other physical restrictions such as not mentally developing beyond the point of a 2 year old or up-to 5 year old yet still being socially interactive. They don't really know and only time will tell.
The good news is that Dillon is completely breathing on his own and is moving around. He doesn't have anything on his face. Yay! He has developed a gag reflex, but the swallowing involves at least 12 different muscle groups and they don't expect him to be able to swallow anytime soon. He does have the feeding tube in his stomach which could be there for a long time (years or even for life). We know that God is able to perform miracles and we pray his will be done.
Thank you for all of you that have sent notes and spoken words of encouragement. Your strong faith in our God is encouraging to us in this time of uncertainty.
The new goal the doctors are shooting for that Dillon will be able to come home is Friday. No promises, but if he is feeding well through the tube and we are at a competent point of caring for him they will let us go home. The doctors said they like us since "we actually like each other and care about Dillon." They said maybe we should throw some things at them and then they'll think about letting us go home. ;-)
Josiah and Tiffany Kuenzi

July 22, 2006 5:01pmWe are in the car on the way home...with Dillon!!! Praise the Lord! Lord willing we will be in service tomorrow but the doctors do not want him in crowds so we will come in after church starts and leave before it ends. If you would like to see Dillon you can call me and come to our house during the day. We will still be making many trips back to the hospital for appointments, but at least we are going home. Thank you again for all of your prayers! Tiffany Kuenzi

Welcome Baby!!!

Victoria and Jonathan had their little boy, Jeremiah Stanley, this morning at 12:58 AM He is 4 lb 0.005 oz (When you're as tiny as he is every little bit counts!) He is in an oxygen tent in the NICU, but is doing very well! I'm an AUNT!

These are the pictures I have for now!

Videos, videos, and more videos!!!

First - My nicknames for the boys have been Dillon aka "Turkey" and JayDonn aka "Monkey" I cme up with better names, though. Jay is my "Chunky Monkey" and Dillon is my "Low-fat Turkey!" HAHAHAHA I LOVE IT!!!

Now - some pictures!
These first two are of Dillon sitting in his special chair with his adaptive switch. It is a yellow button that turn the vibrating pillow on. When he takes his fingers off the pillow turns off.

My boys laying together on the living room floor!
Jay loves the swing! He often falls alseep in it, but sometimes he likes to just sit there and watch things go by.
They got their hands together all on their own.
Isn't it sweet?!
Okay, now for the videos - I know most of them are of JayDonn, it is hard to get videos of Dillon since he doesn't move too much. When he does do something, he normally doesn't repeat it long enough to get the camera out. I am going to try harder to get more of Dillon:
He got ahold of the tube all on his own, maybe he wants me to suction him more, or maybe he thinks if he is holding it I can't use it!)
He is using his head while taking a break and sucking his thumb!)
Daddy would kiss Dillon then Jay leans over and kisses him. It was so sweet. He was doing it even better before I got the camera out - of course!
Well that ought to be enough to keep you busy for a while! Enjoy!

What a BLESSING!!

Praise the Lord for all the improvements we have seen with Dillon. I think this, however, is one of the biggest improvements we have seen. Dillon went for another hearing test today. He is no longer considered "hearing loss" he is considered "developmentally delayed." What this means is that Dillon's ears are now hearing everything in conversation and even as low as a whisper (before he could only hear chain saws, lawn mowers, and air planes). The test showed that his brain is now responding to sound at these levels. This does NOT mean that he understands what he is hearing, nor does he react as a "normal" child would. Just like his eyes, his ears can hear and his brain may not be able to understand. He may never be able to comprehend language. However, this means he does not need the hearing aids -at least for the time being! The audiologist believes the improvement is due to removing the tonsils, putting the tubes in his ears, drying up some of his secretions, and that he is getting bigger. She also thinks, however, that part of the improvement is due to his brain making new connections. It is such a huge burden lifted to not have to try to put the hearing aids in him. Dillon's hearing will continue to be checked about every three months as it can get worse but it can also get better!

All we can do is read, talk, and sing to him, and of course KEEP PRAYING! Dillon has been cooing more, maybe this is because he can hear himself now. We also see his heart rate go up and/or his blood oxygen drop sometimes when JayDonn is crying right beside him. Plus, he woke up and started kicking and moving his arms today when the audiologist put a loud noise in his ears. These are the reactions we have to start looking for to see if he is understanding what he is hearing as there is no test that can help us with that.

Thank you for praying for him, even though there are physical reasons that may be contributing to his improvements, ultimately it is God that is allowing these factors to help! The doctors can try to use these things to explain his improvement, but they can't argue with his brain making new connections - only God can do that!

I Corinthians 1:26-31 - For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

Pictures and Videos

I just love the digital camera/youtube world! What would I have done 10 years ago without such easy access to these things? Better question - what would YOU have done? I see the boys everyday! hahahaha

Daddy with his two Boys (from our 2nd Anniversary)

Dillon and I

The family!

(Last year on our 1st Anniversary we got a picture with the three of us, this year - for our second anniversary we got a picture with the four of us! And NO we aren't going for 5 next year for the third anniversary!)

Dillon doesn't look so big next to Jay anymore. Dillon is 17 pounds 6 ounces JayDonn is 13 pounds!

Jay was crying so I put him right down next to Dillon. I let him kiss Dillon's head and he stopped crying and went right to sleep. I think he knows his big brother.

Now for the videos:
(For those who aren't sure how to view the videos - click on the blue title that is underlined and it will open it up. If anyone still has trouble, let me know.)

Speech Therapy
Dillon started jerking his head when Miss Sue used the vibrator on his lips. He was doing it much more before I got the camera, but at least we got a little on video.

Daddy and Jay
Josiah was playing with Jay the other night, it was so cute. Jay is starting to get his personality. He is going to be a people person I think. He loves to watch people and or be moving at all times.

Jay and Dillon's Therapy
I decided to see what Jay thought of Dillon's vibrator. He clearly does not like it!
Dillon and JayDonn
Dillon was talking a lot so I tried to get it on video, but nothing. So of course as soon as I turned off the camera he started again. I tried to get it again, but he didn't talk too much. I was holding JayDonn at the time and he was kicking my arm so I apologize if you get sea sick while watching!

Dillon Singing!
This is my favorite one from today. I don't know why, but Dillon was singing. He is going to have a beautiful voice - just like his Daddy. He kept talking for several minutes after this, then all of a sudden he stopped and hasn't made another peep! I just can't figure this kid out!

You'll love this video....

Josiah took this last night, Labor Day. JayDonn is becoming more and more fun. Although he is becoming more work too as he likes to be sitting up watching people else he cries.
Saturday we took the boys on a bike ride since Dillon was having a good day. Our neighbor was afraid Josiah was going to pull them with the motorcycle! It was a lot of fun. We went all the way to Wal-Mart and even stopped to see Mrs. Y on our way home! (I have a picture, but it is on the other computer so I will have to try to get that on sometime)
Yesterday we took the boys for a 2.5 hour walk around Pottstown then Josiah worked in the yard and I did some ironing. Then we pretty much rested the rest of the evening. It was so nice to have time to relax together. Of course, today I have a ton of laundry that needs done, a sink full of dishes, carpets that need vacuumed, etc. But at least I had some quality time with my husband.
I just saw that I never did put the video of Dillon standing on me in my blog. It took forever to upload and then I forgot!

Hope ya'll have a great and restful labor day!

Prayer update for Dillon - Posted by Josiah

Thank you for continuing to pray for us and Dillon. At 14.5 months, doctors are giving diagnosis of CP - Cerebral Palsy - Hypotonic Quadriplegia. Our trip to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia today was our first appt with the doctor who runs the CP clinic at CHOP. Down the road he will be managing Dillon's imminent tightness of muscle tone and working with therapists to customize equipment such as wheel chairs, braces and standers.
The most recent change at home is nursing care on the week nights and more equipment to monitor Dillon's vitals due to his increasing breathing difficulties. It seems that Dillon has been in a similar state for quite sometime. Many of the doctors don't really value a life like Dillon's, but now some of the doctors at CHOP have started to take things more seriously and thankfully are treating him more as a child of worth rather than a waste of care and time as suprisingly many have. We are now more aware of Dillon serious breathing problems because the the pulse ox equipment he is on that notifies us when he is in danger zone.
The good thing is we have the breathing equipment and oxygen to help him, but if he is on it too much or too long he will become dependent on these life support systems which obviously is not what we want. The medical personnel would rather keep him on it and see his levels good, but our goal is to keep it as low as possible and only give him help when needed. We are looking into ways to strengthen his breathing instead of getting him hooked on the machines. This requires much monitoring and adjusting levels whereas if you kept him on a higher setting it would not beep as much and would not be as much work for us or the nurses, but if he is kept on these support systems in the long run it would be detrimental to Dillon.
We can already see that he is becoming dependent on this equipment when we turn it low or take him off he gets dangerously low oxygen levels for long periods of time. If we cannot even take him off the equipment for a little bit of time, it becomes that much harder to move him and all the equipment.
They have in the past said if we can't get Dillon to breath a trach is a possibility and also the doctor just told me this last week that Dillon only has an 15% chance of living to be 25 and the number one reason is breathing problems. They offer little help in making Dillon stronger so he can improve and not need oxygen/trach/etc. We know God is in control of Dillon's health and life, but this is not so easy to remember when you are up in the night struggling to help your little boy to breathe, and sometimes only being able to watch him arch in pain and tremors, so weak and helpless. Please pray for us. In praying scripture, the following passages are applicable for this situation.
1Cor. 1:27b God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Family Fun

(This is being posted as Aug 26 - but that is the date I started it - It is actually getting posted on Aug 28)
On August 10 Dad, Mom and Hannah came in from WV, the next day Ezra and Daniel flew in from TX and CA. They were here until the 15th. While they were here we went to the King of Prussia mall and to a lake for a picnic. It was the first time the uncles saw JayDonn. On the 14th, my mom and grandma came in from OH. Lots of family in one house! Mom and Grandma yesterdat morning. While they were here we had tons of doctor appointments, I'll try to recap them.
  1. Sleep Study - My mom stayed overnight at CHOP with Dillon (they wouldn't let me have JayDonn over night so she stayed for me.) I am very proud of her as this was a big step for her. The results according to the tech would be inconclusive since Dillon has so many secretions. The Puml. Docs, however say he stopped breathing 6 times (before the tonsils came out it was 8) an hour. They have put Dillon on oxygen for at night. The first three night he didn't need it, but all yesterday and today he has needed it pretty much the whole day. (Josiah wrote more on the oxygen this morning so please read that post for more info).
  2. Josiah and I spoke with David Gibbs III on the pone for about an hour. He is willing to help us in any ways that he can. Ezra spent some time with him, which is how he knows about us.
  3. Neuro - He wants to have the EEG done to rule out seizures for sure. He doesn't feel an MRI is critical right now, but we may get one done depending on who does the EEG. David Gibbs had asked if he were given a "life expectany" for Dillon, so I asked the neurologist...loaded question - I know. Children with his disabilities live past age of 25 only 15% of the time. Usually lung or kidneys are the reason for the shorter life.
  4. Hearing - The cable for his hearing test was broken when she tried to use it so we could not run the test. Instead, the audiologist decided to run some other testing. For the first time ever Dillon's ears are testing as healthy. His ears are hearing now - but we still have no idea if his brain is hearing. It is like his eyes, they are healthy but his brain is not getting the information of what he is seeing. However, the last two times we tested his brain there were slight improvements each time so it is hopeful. She does not want us using the hearing aids until the next test. She has only had two people ever who have improved like we are hoping Dillon is. KEEP PRAYING! This was the only one I consider positive of all the appointments.
  5. Please read the previous post by my husband as far as our appointment in CHOP yesterday and a general summary of what is going on. I am so tired of all these doctors who see Dillon for 15 minutes telling me he is tight. Even his physical therapist is tired of hearing that, she sees him for an hour every week and knows that he is not tight all the time. We both think Dillon just fights the doctors. They are so abrupt with him and I don't think he likes them. This doctor even told us that in the future we are going to need to talk with him about botox injections to loosen the muscles. Dillon is not tight yet, they think it is a sure thing that he will be. I am not so sure. I think if we keep working with him and keep PRAYING for him he won't need any of that stuff!

Appointments with Dillon, now that he is on oxygen and all, it is getting harder and harder for me. I have tried asking individuals to go with me, but everyone has a busy life so it is hard to find someone who can take a day off work to help. I was getting discouraged from even asking since it is so hard for me to ask to begin with and then I felt even worse becuase I am sure people felt bad having to tell me they weren't able to go. However, Josiah suggested we ask Pastor for help finding people who would be willing to help. Rachel sent an email out for us. We are so thankful for those who have responded that they are willing to be put on a list for me to call when I need help. We especially want to thank Mrs. Y (who lives about five minutes from us) for her willingness to help me with any and all appointments that she possibly can! It is such a blessing to me. It is also a great lesson for me - to put aside self and accept help. But thank you Mrs. Y for your friendship already...I am looking forward to building a deeper friendship with you!

That's about it. Pictures are taking too long for me to get them on my blog right now, but there are new ones on our website. http://josiahntiffany.com/family.html Click on the box on the left side to see more.

"What to do about Your Brain-Injured Child"

I have a bad habit of listening to people and taking what they say to be truth. Long ago I found out about a book called "What to do about Your Brain-Injured Child" by Glenn Doman. I do not even remember how it came across my path. I asked a few people about it and was told how bad it was. I asked a doctor at St. Christopher’s about it and was told not only is it horrible but that she knew a mother who killed her child and then herself over it. Naturally, I didn’t even bother to read the book even though I had bought it from half.com. As you saw from the post about Mondays appointments, doctors have given up on Dillon. They don’t give me anything hope in helping him to get better. Out of desperation and curiosity I took the book off my shelf and began reading. I was amazed at what I read; I walked around the house reading as I went. Even when I woke up in the middle of the night to feed Jay I would force my eyes to focus so that I could continue reading. I am going to try to sum up some of the things I read, however, for anyone with a brain-injured family member – READ THE BOOK! Or even for those of you who want to understand Dillon better, please read the book.
Glenn Doman started as a physical therapist who desired to learn as much as he could. He came across a child who was no more than two feet long, but had the head of a normal adult, and spoke fluently. He was eleven years old. Mr. Doman found the child’s doctor Fay Temple, and they ended up working together for many years. You really need to read to understand it all, but basically a group of doctors, nurses, therapists, etc. joined together to try to help the brain-injured child. Theywere willing to let the team as a whole “attack” their methods. Their goal was to figure out why they were ineffective. Their answers were always, “because this is how we have always done it”, or “because this is how we were taught to do it.” To make a long story short, this group of people has had an institute in Philadelphia for 51 years now. Their therapy ideas have done amazing things with children. One place in the book it says that they work with kids in comas ranging from 60 days to several years. About 50% of the time they can bring children of out comas! They have helped children to walk, talk, see and hear. The idea is to do the therapy with the child every waking hour. You need to find the break in their brain and work to fix it. Therapy shouldn’t be working with arms and legs that work perfectly fine, it should be working to fix the injured brain. They said for children who have light reaction only, which is what Dillon has, to shine a flash light in their eyes from 18 inches away for two second. Do this ten times with 3 seconds in between each time. This allows their eye to dilate 120 times whereas in a normal day it would be so many less. This works their brain in the area they do have to make it stronger with the hope of the child being able to see outline after a while. Then the therapy would change until they could see more, etc. Another idea they had is for the child who on the tummy can move their arms and legs but aren’t getting anywhere. They said to buld an 8 foot long ramp with 8 inch sides and 30 inches wide. It is to be elevated high enough that the smallest movement of the part of the child will push them down. This encourages the child and takes away the “I failed again!” attitude. It was so good for me to be reminded that even though Dillon can express it he knows when I am saying “you failed again” instead of “good boy, you did it!”
There was so much information in the book I can’t even begin to put it all in here, but I did call the institute. They offer classes for both parents that are 5 days long, all day, with only very short breaks. This class is just over $1,600. There are then more intense levels of therapy you could continue with if you decide. The appointment to have your child examined is about $3,000 and then the most intense level requires a visit every 6 months that is about $4,500 (however these visits are a full week long at the institute.)

So where are we at with this? I have decided to do as much as I can and to do it for no less than 3 months in order to give it a fair chance. These people are the only ones who think it is possible to help a brain-injured child get WELL, not just better but well! I am so tired of taking my son to people who take away hope; I am willing to try what these people say. If God still doesn’t want Dillon to get well, he won’t, but at least I will never look back and say “did God just want to see if I would be selfless enough to commit myself to helping Dillon? Did I just give up on God? Did I not have faith that God could heal?” I won’t have those doubts; I will look back knowing that I did everything I could to help Dillon be the most he can be. And no, doing what I can is not taking God out of the equation. When you get strep throat – do you take medicine or do you sit back and say “God can heal it.” When you have a head ache, do you take pain killers or do you say “I am not going to take anything because God must want me to have it since He allowed me to get it.”? I know that if this therapy, or any therapy works for Dillon, it will be ONLY because God allowed it to work for him. Dillon is in God’s hands, but as his mother I believe God wants me to do everything I can to try to help Dillon. I hope this makes sense because I really have given this much thought. I do not think it is a lack of faith to try different things, just a it is not lack of faith to take medicine for other things. Okay, so my schedule is this:
Starting at 10 am and going every hour until 10 pm (Sundays are off, hours of therapy are off as well). We start with the vibrator for about 1.5 minutes, then we do two times of lemon or lime juice on his tongue, then we do the flashlight in his eyes, then we do the ice cold thermometer on the back of his mouth. Plus three times a day Josiah and I are “patterning” Dillon. This is where we put him on his tummy and move his arms, legs, and head in the pattern of how he would “grunt crawl”. We started this on Thursday and already we are seeing him lift his head and try to move his arms and legs to try to move. Tonight, Josiah and I built him the ramp in hopes of encouraging him by letting him feel himself actually moving. We are so happy with how he has been doing the last couple of days, I am more determined than ever to give this a try.

I have to – for Dillon.

Doctors...

I called the feeding team back yesterday to see why they aren't doing something to find out more about Dillon's swallows, they didn't call me back. So I called again today. They said it isn't something they would order because they wouldn't follow-up once we get the results so I can ask Pulm. (lung docs) or his Ped. So I'll do just that!
The vision therapist said she has heard of other parents who didn't like the eye doctor when I told her of our experience. I am putting in writing what happened, at the manager of the departments request, and she will try to schedule me with the chief of ophthalmology so I can inform him. Something needs to be done so this doctor will learn to have some compassion for special needs children and their families.

:-)

I like when I get answers and can hopefully change things so other parents don't have to deal with heartless doctors

Doctors are dumb!

First I need to catch up again. A few days ago, on Sunday, Jay turned one month! I can't believe it's been a month already. Exactly one week before that, it was one full year that Dillon has been home from the NICU. This one is easier to believe, it has been a long year, so looking back it does in deed feel like a full year.

Yesterday Dillon had three appointments in Philly. His hearing teacher's 22 year old daughter went with me. I couldn't find anyone so when she volunteered her daughter I took her up on it. It was very nice of this girl, who had never met me before, to be at my house at 6:30am and not leave my house until 6pm! Thank you very much (if you ever read this)!

Appointment 1: Feeding Team
Summary: Waste of time
Explanation: We got there and the team wanted to know why we were there to see them. Okay, they have Dillon's records in their hands - why on earth do they feel the need to actual make me say "uh DUH! because he can't suck or swallow!" But anyways...the speech therapist confirmed with a stethoscope that she did hear a SWALLOW! Praise the Lord! However, they do not know if he swallowed to his stomach or if it went into his lungs. For reasons I do not understand, and have a call into them today to make them explain it to me again, they will not do the saliva gram to see where he is swallowing to. This makes me so mad because if we knew it went to his stomach we could start to give him food, if it is going to his lungs then we need to know to keep a better eye on him to make sure he doesn't get pneumonia. They did suggest a car seat bed since Dillon is having a hard time in the upright position. They want him to increase his food because he's underweight. Really?!?! Dillon is under weight?!? I never would have guessed! So they want me to increase him from 700ml to 800ml of food a day slowly...in two days! Okay people, that is not slow. One of the doctors asked me, "Has anyone ever talked to you about a trachea?" WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH THIS DOCTOR??? Why would she bring that up, he is doing great! Yes he still labors to breath a little, but not enough for a trachea, she needs to stick with doing her job of "feeding team" (because she was having trouble with doing that) and leave that up to the lung docs - who she knows I am seeing next week. I was told their only suggestion was to see GI but oh wait, they know I am already seeing them next week as well. When asked, I was offered NO suggestions on how to increase the frequency or effectiveness of Dillon's swallows. In fact, they went as far the opposite direction to tell me that the vibration I am doing with him has absolutely no proof of it working, but to "continue it anyways because he is so severely injured and not getting sensory things, that who knows, maybe it will do something for him." What a waste of my time, they gave me no new ideas, told me what I am doing is ineffective, and told me they aren't going to help me determine if I can give him anything by mouth.

Appointment 2: Urology
Summary: Good
Explanation: Everything checked out fine, the doctor just wants to follow up in a year.

Appointment 3: Ophthalmology
Summary: Why do I even bother?
Explanation: First of all, we didn't even get seen for an hour and a half after my appointment time. I tell the docs all about Dillon's vision, that he only tracked once and that we sometimes can get some reaction to lights (sometimes he seems to "find" the light with his eyes). So what does the doctor do? She pulls out a light blue beanie baby bear (Keep in mind with CVI they see red and orange better than any other color) and puts it in front of his face. At this point, I was either going to yell, be very rude, or cry...so I remained silent. But I really wonder where these people went to school. They didn't even give Dillon a far chance to show them what he can do. They should have used a colored flashing light, or at the VERY least a black and white and red object. I asked about a therapy technique I have read about in "What to do about your brain-injured child" (I'll explain that in another post) and the other doctor said "Don't get your hopes up, there's no proof that it works." Not according to the book and the research in it. He also told me that he doesn't need to see Dillon for a year. Why? I asked. Because "There isn't going to be any change in him, so I don't need to see him." He had just finished telling me that since Dillon's vision wasn't better by a year it isn't going to be. Well thanks a lot for writing off my child, Doc, but if it's alright with you we aren't going to! Oh, and he also informed me that since Dillon's cheeks are broader than his skull it shows how badly hurt he is, another reason why we aren't going to see any improvements.

So, how's that for a day, for you?

More Pictures and Videos

I think I'll drive you (and me!) crazy now that I know how to use YouTube with all the videos! But I hope you enjoy them...since so many of you are so far away and don't get to see the boys I like the idea of letting you watch them as they grow up!
Isn't he sweet?

I think this is the first picture of me with both of my boys...I have to get more of these!

I love how he fell asleep...so cute!

Matching outfits, resting on the bean bag

I'm rock climbing!

Don't I look like a little Marine, especially with the High-and-tight Daddy gave me?! (We were letting Dillon's hair grow so we would have enough to send away for a hair anaylsis, so we finally cut it last night and sent that away today. I'll let you know when I get the results.)

Pictures and Video

My sleeping angels!

Daddy likes to tease JayDonn when he is hungry by letting him suck on his nose.

I tired to get a picture with JayDonn's head up and his eyes open big, but he put his hand up just as I took it - silly lil boy.

A family in our church gave Dillon this big bean bag for his birthday to help with positioning, but JayDonn enjoys it too.

We took Dillon and JayDonn out to our little pool tonight. Since it wasn't extreamly hot today the pool water was pretty cold. As soon as Si put JayDonn's feet in the water he started to cry. Si got him in to the waist, but JayDonn did not like it one bit. I got Dillon's feet wet and e pulled them up and at one point he sighed. But he did better than JayDonn. Keep in mind JayDonn hasn't even been in a bath tub yet because his cord just fell off. After a short "swim" the boys got in the tube with Daddy. It was oh so cute! JayDonn started to cry, then when he realized it was nice warm water he relaxed and almost went to sleep! Silly boy! Dillon started to wiggle when he got in.

Click here for the video where JayDonn opened his eyes for the first time ever. Daddy caught it on video!

JayDonn Daniel Kuenzi!!

Okay, it is taking me a while to get to this...but we are blessed beyond words to announce that JayDonn Daniel Kuenzi was born June 29, 2007 at 5:41pm. He is healthy!!! My water broke at 7am so we rushed to the hospital and sat there till 2:30 without contractions when they decided to start a drip to get the contractions going. Once the contractions started (where they actually HURT, that is) it was only about 30-45 minutes is my guess. I pushed through 2 contractions and he was born! The doctor ended up being one from a different practice because the one I was supposed to have was in the OR doing a c-section. The new doctor was nice though. JayDonn was born with his hand above his head, and sure enough he is constantly putting his hands on the top of his head. His face was a little gray so they suctioned him (he came out so quick the fluid probably didn't come out as much as it should have). This caused a huge scream and his face was instantly red,, not pink, but red. Josiah and I stood there crying over how amazing he is. He cried when Daddy flashed the camera in his face, he jumped when doors were shut, he wiggled all around, he knew instantly how to nurse. Everything was so different. Since the doctor didn't know us at all to know about Dillon - I wonder if she was wondering why I kept saying "He cried! Thank you Lord, he cried!"
Dillon met JayDonn shortly after he was born, of course I don't think either of them really had any idea, but it was cute for us. Later on we saw that anytime JayDonn is within reach of any part of Dillon - arm, hand, knee - he sucks on poor Dillon! It really is quite cute.
Dad and Mom Kuenzi and Hannah were here helping until the 4th and my parents arrived the 4th until Monday. So I have been on my own since Monday. Things are going okay. I took my first trip out with them yesterday - boy do we draw attention! Me pushing the double stroller, everyone thinks they are twins until they look in, and JayDonn screaming which draws even more attention! Ikes! But I was able to hand out one of Dillon's tracts to the cashier at walmart and the other cashier instantly took it from her to see what it was too.
JayDonn doesn't cry too much, he really is a good baby. He will be awake for up to two hours at a time sometimes and he will just look around and play with his fingers. One night he was crying just to be held so Daddy put him in the boy's room in the crib (he is usually in the bassinet next to my bed) and let him cry for a bit. He didn't do that again the rest of the night or the next couple nights.
That pretty much sums it up - JayDonn's first two weeks of life! Thank you to all those who prayed for a healthy baby! He is, and what a blessing! It has been hard, having a healthy baby after Dillon. It was hard to see JayDonn lifting his head at one day of age almost as well as Dillon can at 13 months, to see JayDonn making more connections with us than Dillon has ever been able to do, to hear him cry, to see him eat, to watch the funny faces he makes with his mouth, etc. I have thought of it as being like peroxide. When I was about 7 I stepped on a nail, my dad poured a bottle of peroxide on my foot and I remember screaming my head off because it hurt so bad. today, however, I am not sure if I can find the scar on my foot to know which foot it was. The stinging peroxide helped heal my wound. JayDonn is going to be my peroxide. It stings, it hurts, it tears my heart out to now fully see just how injured my precious Dillon is, but one I will heal and God is going to use JayDonn in that healing process.
Oh yeah, we are starting to do fund raising for the Oxygen treatments for Dillon. My parents are having a yard sale in August where people from church and friends have donated things to sell. The yard sale will not have prices, they will accept any reasonable offer and it is being advertised as a fund raising thing for Dillon, so we will see how that goes! I have to make an appointment next week with the branch manager at the bank to set up an account for the money to be held in until we are ready, this way too, if people wanted to send the money directly to the bank to know it is more legit they can.
One more thing... I am getting the process going on nursing care. If I can figure out why Dillon is having so many secretions (soaking through full bath towels folded so it is 4 layers thick) at night and help correct this then I will just get the nursing care of one day a week so I can run errands. If I cannot fix his secretion problem I will have to get someone for at nights so the poor boy doesn't cover himself with secretions every night.
Okay that's it!
(Well after I wrote that I remembered - Josiah starts a new job on the 24th, it is a step forward in the direction he wants to go in, so he accepted the position)
